College Dorm DecoratingAlthough college dorm decorating can be a little tricky due to rules and limited options, you can still add some personal touches to your dorm room. Make sure you check the rules before doing anything serious, like painting walls or getting radical. Decorating your dorm room can be as simple as coordinating your colors of drapes, bed coverings, and rugs or wall hangings. You can also emulate a style (like Modern, Victorian, or European). Even use a combination of elements that have some synergy. Personal creations, favorite places, people, sports can also add a flair. Family, friends, and pet photos can warm your dorm room. Maybe posters of your special interests or hobbies if appropriate. Little nick knacks and collector items can also give some personal touches. You don't have to spend a lot of money, just put some thought and time into a theme that you want to demonstrate in your room. Make it seasonal and change up the decor throughout the year. Hey, it's your room (well, depending on if you have a roommate, and if so make sure you coordinate). Color Has An Impact: Believe it or not, colors have a big impact on style, attitude, and productivity. Take the time to select colors that will stimulate rather than put you to sleep. Here are the basic color characteristics according to physiologists:
In general bright shades of colors will pick you up, dark drab shades of colors will put you to sleep. Don't Forget The Green: Plants are a great pick me up. They look good, are generally easy to take care of, and even make oxygen. You can go for the blooming type or just something simple like a vine or succulent. Might want to check with any roommates to make sure they don't have any allergies. Cheap Sources: if you're on a tight budge (as many students are), check out garage sales and resell shops for bargains. Some of the best resell shops I've seen are at churches since many will donate some pretty nice things and the prices are very reasonable. Check the local want ads or Craigslist to see what bargains you can find. If you have some art or decorating skills, start with raw materials and create your own items. Don't Sacrifice Functionality: Arrange your room to make sure you have a comfortable, well lit study space. You most likely will be spending a lot of time hitting the books so make it easy on yourself. Incorporate storage into any design since it's always in short supply. Clutter Is Not Decorating: The first thing most students learn is it's easy to fill up your small space and constantly be tripping over things. Keep it simple, easy to clean up, and organized. You can add your own style to anything but don't go overboard and fill up every nook and cranny. Too many collectables or knick knacks just take up space and gather dust.. |
